Standup & Improv Workshops

NOTE: Even though these workshops are geared toward comedic performers, anyone can take them! And taking the workshop will get you into our Improv Vs. Standup show later in the evening: https://www.facebook.com/events/164159617449513/

The workshops will run back to back in our main space. Each workshop is $5 (or take both for $8)!

6-7pm: STANDUP (for Improvisers) with Laura McLean

This month is finding truth in your stand-up! Whether you’re a storyteller, one liner, character, absurdist or prop comic, stand up should reflect the truth about you. Come to this stand-up comedy writing session and workshop where you’ll learn the basics of stand-up, find your character inspiration, write and perform your set, and get constructive feedback. P.S. Bombing is all part of the learning process, and in some cases really funny.

Laura McLean has been a stand up comic in Ottawa for the past three years. She regularly performs at indie shows such as Off the Rails at The Wellington Eatery and Swizzles Comedy Night at Swizzles Bar and Grill. She’s a graduate from Queen’s University’s Drama program and Algonquin College’s Scriptwriting program. Laura currently works as a part-time cafeteria worker, but eventually hopes to work as a full-time cafeteria worker.

7-8pm: IMPROV (for Standups) with Dani Alon

Don’t think you can keep a stream of wit going for the entirety of a scene? No worries. The basis of great longform improv is to respond honestly in the moment to the last thing your partner said. Dropping truthbombs makes your comedy relateable to an audience, and is easier and more fun to play for a longer period of time. Using real stories, opinions and observations, you’ll learn to generate compelling characters and scenes from kernels of truth.

Dani Alon began improvising in 2009 in Toronto. She learned longform improv at the Impatient Theatre Company, where she performed weekly from 2010 to 2012, and trained at the Second City Conservatory in Toronto, the legendary iO Theater in Chicago and the Upright Citizens Brigade in New York. She has performed in Big City Improv Festival, Ottawa Improv Festival, and Mprov. Dani is the Education Director of the Improv Embassy and also works as an animator and designer.
