Intro to Stand-Up

How do Maria Bamford, Ali Wong and Hannibal Buress come up with their routines? Lots of different ways! No two comedians are the same, and this class will give you an assortment of tools to find your unique comedic voice. Students will learn how to structure a joke, mine real life for comedic premises, and develop their onstage persona. By the end of the course you’ll have developed enough material for your first 3-5 minute set.

Wednesdays, 7 to 9 pm, June 3 to 24 (with Dani Alon and Chelsea Fahey)

Variable Pricing: The regular course price is $100 (+HST). We are also offering spots at the reduced price of $50 (+HST) for students with financial need, as well a donor’s price at $150 (+HST), for those with the means to donate extra to support the Embassy. There is also a free spot for recipients of our Inclusion Scholarship (the deadline to apply is Monday, May 25 at 11:59pm — recipients will be notified by the end of the week).

This course will be run online using Zoom. We recommend downloading the program in advance:

1. You will need a laptop or desktop with reliable internet connection, and we recommend using headphones or earbuds.
2. If you’ve never used the software before, please have it downloaded in advance — we suggest trying it out with friends before the beginning of the course and/or logging onto the session at least 15 minutes early to work out any tech issues.

Dani Alon

Dani Alon is the Artistic Director and Co-Founder of the Improv Embassy. She began improvising in 2009 in Toronto, where she performed weekly with the Impatient Theatre Co. from 2010 to 2012. She is a graduate of the Second City Conservatory and has studied at iO Chicago and UCB NY. She is currently a member of Ottawa sketch troupe Shit Hot Shit Show. Dani has also been doing stand-up since 2017 and is the creator and co-producer of The Fembassy, a comedy show for women and non-binary performers. Outside of the Embassy, she has taught and performed in Bristol, UK (Bristol Improv Theatre) and Sarasota, FL (Florida Studio Theatre) with “Mom & Dad” duo partner and Embassy co-founder Chris Hannay. The pair have also performed at the Big City Improv Festival in Toronto and Mprov in Montreal. Dani also works as an animator and designer (she made our logo!).

Chelsea Fahey

Chelsea Fahey fell in love with improv around the dinner table, playing the questions-only game with her boisterous family. She honed her skills with the Improv Embassy (back when they were Experimental Farm Theatre), and became a founding member of the Trevor Comedy troupe. Chelsea is also a member of local sketch troupe Shit Hot Shit Show, and has been doing stand-up around Ottawa since 2018. Chelsea is always looking for ways to grow as a performer whether it’s taking classes, workshops or watching shows wherever she travels.
